BIRTH THROUGH PRE-K

Explore how we implement the Reggio Emilia philosophy across our center to foster our students development

"Stand aside for a while and leave room for learning, observe carefully what children do, and then, if you have understood well, perhaps teaching will be different from before."

-Loris Malaguzzi, Founder of Reggio Emilia

Placement at the beginning of the year is based on chronological age, developmental age, and collective enrollment of the center. Children do not necessarily progress in a linear fashion through the classes as they will go to the class that will benefit them the most. This may mean that some children may “skip” a class depending on their developmental abilities when a transition is being implemented.

We follow North Carolina state regulations regarding class ratios; however, we generally aim to maintain even smaller ratios than the state standards. Please note the ratios displayed in each age range below reflect the NC State Regulations. Our class sizes and ratios are depending upon current enrollment demographics.

Nutrition at Busy Bee

We are proud to include a nutrition program as part of our care. We focus on providing fresh, quality foods to our students. Children are offered breakfast, lunch and a late afternoon snack in a family style approach. Outside of these structured mealtimes snacks are offered as needed. We recognize that nutrition is a vital to facilitate engagement for learning.

FRESH, SEASONAL MENUS

Our resident nutrition director, JK Hamilton, has an extensive background in the culinary arts. He excels at developing rotating menus that utilize seasonal ingredients. JK prepares all meals on-site with the assistance of support staff, sourcing primarily fresh and flash-frozen food items to ensure maximum nutrition.

MEALTIME IS COMMUNITY TIME

Meals are provided in classroom, family-style with children participating in all aspects of mealtime - from setting up for the meal, consumption of the meal, and cleaning up post meal. You won’t find disposable plates, utensils or cups in our classrooms as we are working towards becoming a zero waste school.

MEALTIME IS LEARNING TIME

Meals provide an excellent opportunity for learning. From social and pragmatic skills (ex: turn taking, sharing), fine motor skills (ex: use of utensils, opening containers), functional skills (ex: setting table, clearing table), and vocabulary (food, food groups, etc.).

Parents Are Part of Our Team

…if desired of course!

We see value in providing our families with individualized support, education, and resources for their child’s learning and development. We believe in working together to address challenges and build on strengths.

To be honest, we find that most, if not all of our families appreciate the additional opportunities provided for involvement in their children’s world, beyond the basic daily updates. We are proud to host an annual “Spring Fling” for families, as well as, occasional “Parent’s Night Out” events and educational opportunities (e.g., CPR classes).

Our families report back that they truly enjoy these events as an opportunity to see their children in their learning environment outside the hustle and bustle during the week, as well as, to get to know other families in their community.
